I just read a very emotional, yet hopeful story about music therapy in the hospital setting. As Bob Jones reports from Akron Ohio, a young man there is using music therapy as a coping mechanism as he undergoes dialysis treatment and waits to find a kidney donor. Chris Blackwell was almost out of high school when he discovered that he had renal disease. The news of his was catastrophic for him. He undergoes dialysis treatment three times a week. The process can take up to six hours.
Connected to the loud humming machine, Blackwell feels as though he would lose his grip on reality if it wasn't for music. Sarah Tobias, the resident music therapy coordinator, accompanies him on guitar every Wednesday during his treatment. Together they play and sing songs that help Blackwell get through the harrowing experience.
Although Blackwell has not yet found a donor for his kidney, he likes to dream of life as a musician on stage. He continues to hope, and Tobias continues to sing with him.
I wanted to share this story because it underlines the importance of music therapy to people who are chronically ill. Music provides an escape for Blackwell, a much needed reprieve from a hellish situation. It is my hope that in the future, more people will gain access to this wonderful and effective treatment.
